It is interesting to watch the controversy swirling around the fact that there are no bands in the parade for the Willmar Fests (formerly Kaffee Fest) and the Spicer Fourth of July parade.
On Sunday, June 24, I was in Alexandria for the Vikingland Band Festival, at which event 19 bands performed. Bands were from all over the state of Minnesota.
Who took first place for Class A? It was the band from Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. That band also took first place in the color guard, percussion and wind sections of Class A.
Why can't a big school like Willmar or even New London-Spicer sponsor a fine high school band? If it is a money issue, why then does a little school like KMS have money for a fine band, but Willmar and/or New London-Spicer do not?
It speaks volumes that a small school can sponsor a band, win in big band competitions, and also go on large band trips which KMS has done in the past, including being in a parade in our nation's capital, Washington, D.C., and Rhode Island, being in one of the nation's oldest Fourth of July parades.
