My chief argument with present-day fundamentalists (so far removed from those with whom I grew up) is that they are the chief faction in our society which is most militant and supportive of the Pentagon.
Indeed they have transformed the Christian dove of peace into a war hawk with the wave of a wand like some mad magician. It seems that they cannot wait for the day of wrath to descend on the earth in a final bloodbath of an Armageddon.
Curiously they appear to have replaced the Jesus of the Gospels, known as the Prince of Peace, with the Jesus of the Book of Revelations who will return in a furious rage to take vengeance on all who did not receive him as Savior and Lord, "with a sword in his mouth and and blood smeared on his garments" -- something of a complete role revision, wouldn't you say, transforming him suddenly into a kind of Darth Vader instead of gentle Jesus, meek and mild?
Can such an alternative image truly express the same person? How can these fervent disciples of Christ be so supportive of our war efforts when Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God" and "If your enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst give him to drink"?
The Sermon on the Mount seems to mean nothing to them in their eagerness to get their sorry souls into heaven with the least possible harm to their own persons! As religious bodies, the conservative Catholics and Protestant fundamentalists seem to relish the end times even as recently a group of them declared the end of the world with great anticipation, hastening their day of liberation in a glorious rapture into the heavenly city while the remainder of mankind remain behind to endure horrific tribulation and eventually an eternity consigned to hell.
As of now, however, their chief mantra seems to be "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!"
