ST. CLOUD -- Hits were hard to find for both the Litchfield Dragons and the Paynesville Bulldogs in Class AA section baseball at the Municipal Athletic complex on Monday evening.

Paynesville fell to St. Cloud Cathedral 5-1 in Section 6AA and Litchfield dropped a 2-0 decision to Orono in 5AA. Both area teams had three hits in the winner's bracket contests.

Paynesville plays Staples-Motley at 7 p.m. today back on Putz Field. The loser is out while the winner advances to Thursday championship round needing two wins against the Crusaders. The Cardinals beat Rocori 2-1.

Litchfield plays simultaneously tonight on Faber Field against Delano, which ousted Big Lake 5-4.

Litchfield lost for the third time to Orono, but this was the closest of the three meetings between the Wright County Conference foes.

Jud McKown, the winning pitcher, gave up doubles to Shane Gutormson and Brady Smith, plus a single to Tyler Kielty, but didn't walk a batter while fanning five.

His counterpart, Aaron Valiant gave up seven hits and one earned run. He didn't walk anyone and fanned two.

The Spartans got an unearned run in the fourth when Chase Gottshcalk scored on a throwing error -- the game's lone error.

Their insurance run scored in the top of the seventh on a squeeze play.

The Bulldogs got their only run in the top of the first when they got two of their three hits. Shane Kampsen singled and sped hom on a Jake Deadrick double.

But the Crusaders' Jack Arnold shut the door after that, allowing just a Jason Kampsen single the next six innings. He finished with a three-hitter with five strikeout, walking just one Bulldog.

Nathan Nietfeld took the loss. He gave up 12 hits over six innings, walked one and fanned four.

The Crusaders scored three in the bottom of the first on consecutive run-scoring hits by Nic Maiers, Jason Janzen and Sean Carnahan.

Paynesville coach Brad Skoglund said Arnold handcuffed his hitters.

"He did a great job mixing it up," said Skoglund. "He threw a lot of change ups and kept (the ball) down."
