LITCHFIELD -- The Litchfield School Board cut more than $300,000 from the Litchfield School District's 2008-09 budget Monday as the first step of the district plan to exit statutory operating debt.

Superintendent Bill Wold said Tuesday the School Board approved $328,750 in budget reductions during Monday's regular meeting.

Some of the cuts recommended by administration included: a reduction in district staff development, reducing textbook expenditures, eliminating activity bus routes, and reconfiguring a payment method for the district's technology department salaries.

The district is making cuts to the 2008-09 budget to climb out of statutory operating debt.

Wold said last week that administration realized in November the district had fallen into statutory operating debt after receiving an unexpected special education debt of $300,000. The debt put the district's finances below the level allowed by the state Department of Education.
