Litchfield swimmer Warren sets pair of section marks
WILLMAR -- Litchfield sophomore Marissa Warren won a pair of events in record-setting time and swam a leg on the Dragons' second-place 200-Medley Relay on Saturday during the Section 3A Swimming and Diving championships at the packed senior high school pool.
Warren set new section marks of 57.30 in the 100 Butterfly and 59.34 in the 100 Backstroke. She broke her own 3A 2010 record in the fly and a seven-year-old standard in the back.
Litchfield also qualified two relays. The Dragons medley relay finished second beating the state qualifying time by more than four seconds. The foursome finished just behind meet champion Hutchinson. The Tigers quartet set a new 3A standard by .11 undercutting a Hutchinson record set in 2009.
Shelbie Walsh of Litchfield placed fourth in diving to advance. Molly Grussing of Montevideo just missed in the 50 freesyle.
Hutchinson finished far out front for the team trophy followed by Marshall, which won both freestyle relays and also had three individual champions.
Willmar's best finishes were a fifth in the medley relay and fifth-place finishes by Rose Jackson in the 50 free and Alycia Holwerda in the breaststroke.
But it was still a terrific meet for a young team, pointed out the Cardinals head coach Carl Shuldes: "Over the two days, we had 39 lifetime bests in individual events and relays splits."
Marshall's Kylie Vermiere winning time in the 500 free of 5:15.22 broke the section record of 5:17.88 that had been held by Alissa Tinklenberg of Willmar since 2009.
The three-day Class AA and A meets begin Thursday with diving prelims at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
