The Minnesota State Fair is heading into its first weekend and several local residents will be competing in different contests starting today.
Three groups from the talent show at the Kandiyohi County Fair will compete at the State Fair. The competitions are each evening at the Family Fair at Baldwin Park.
Mari, Malliea and Malli Ryberg will compete in the Pre-Teen division as the Bluegrass Fiddlers piano trio at 7 p.m. tonight.
Erica Ellingson will compete in the Teen division with a vocal and piano solo at 7 p.m. Aug. 28.
The barbershop quartet of Mark Malem, Don Shields, Bob Starz and Jon Zaske will compete in the Open division singing "Sitting on Top of the World" at 7 pm. Aug. 31.
Marilyn Johnson will participate in the Senior Citizen day at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 30 at Leinie Lodge Bandshell.
Willmar woodcarver Fred Cogelow will be participating in a new event at the state fair called 12'12'12 in which visitors will be able to peer into the window of a working artist's world.
For 12 hours each of the 12 days of the 2012 fair, a Minnesota artist will work in a studio and visitors will be given a rare glimpse into how an art object is created. The studio is located in the Fine Arts Center.
The featured artists work in 2D and 3D media such as sculpture, printmaking, drawing, fibers, photography, painting and installation.
Cogelow will the artist on Aug. 29. The other artists are Abigail Woods Anderson, Loretta Bebeau, Cheng-Khee Chee, Gregory Euclide, Fawzia Khan, Ron Merchant, Kimber Olson, Dani Roach, Sean Smuda, Scott Stulen and Michelle Westmark.
