Local Roundup: Cardinals score early, often in win over CMC

WILLMAR -- The Willmar boys soccer team won its sixth game of the season in convincing fashion, scoring twice in the first half and adding three more in the second of a 5-0 over Central Minnesota Christian on Saturday at Kennedy Field.

The Cardinals' Tim Rogers netted the game-winner just three minutes in, scoring unassisted. Handerson Tevalan scored the Cardinals' second goal in the 37th minute on an assist from Remigio Becerra.

Willmar's Cesar Jimenez scored two consecutive goals in the second half, the first on an assist from Tevalan and the second coming on a penalty kick. Rogers scored his second goal of the game in the 72nd minute on an assist from Juan Contreras.

Willmar improved to 6-2-1 overall, and the Cardinals play St. Cloud Tech at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Cloud State University

Minnewaska Tournament

GLENWOOD -- Hancock defeated Minnewaska to take first place in the Lakers' invitational tournament on Saturday.

The Owls (13-1 overall) and Lakers both won three games in pool play, and Hancock won in the final 25-16, 25-23. Benson and Perham were both 2-1 in pool play, and the Braves won the third-place match 15-25, 25-15, 15-9.

Osakis defeated Ortonville in the 5th-6th-place match 25-18, 25-18, and New London-Spicer won the 7th-8th-place match over Brandon-Evansville 25-17, 25-13

Montevideo Invite

MONTEVIDEO -- Lakeview defeated Glencoe-Silver Lake in three games to win the championship match of the Montevideo Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

Lakeview downed GSL 25-23, 16-25, 18-16 in the final. Central Minnesota Christian took third place with a win over Dawson-Boyd, Wabasso defeated Wahpeton in the 5th-6th-place game, and Montevideo took out Paynesville in the 7th-8th-place match.

Mankato West Invitational

Litchfield Dragons' 1-doubles team of Anna Johnson and Kelley Spreiter placed third in the Mankato West Invitational, an individual tournament in Mankato on Saturday.

Johnson and Spreiter won two of three matches.

The Dragons' 1-singles player Alissa Holmgren, 2-singles player Kaity Johnson and 4-singles player Chantal Nivaud all won matches.

Litchfield's 2-doubles team of Emma Lemke and Rachel Fredman also won a match.

Litchfield, which is 6-6 overall this season, plays at Glencoe-Silver Lake at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Hawk Creek leagues wrap

Hawk Creek golf leagues wrapped up last week with championship matches in the club's Callaway and Titleist divisions.

In the Titleist division, Ted Taatjes and Brian Nelson outpaced regular-season champs Steve and Andy Bristle.

Hawk Creek grounds crew workers Ron Ulferts and Ernie Jenkins pulled ahead of Gary Newman and Larry Serbus in the Callaway division.

Nate Hultgren and Cam Macht won the Nike division earlier this month, while Curt Slagter and Becky Armstrong held on to win the Seniors division.
