Loren R. Skonberg Sept. 27, 1923 - March 7, 2009
GLENWOOD -- Loren "Skonny" Robert Skonberg, 85, of Glenwood died Saturday at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Glenwood Lutheran Church.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
He was born Sept. 27, 1923, in Clinton, Iowa, to Hjalmer and Olga (Mattson) Skonberg. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1943, then served in the Army Air Force in England. After the war, he attended the University of Iowa, the American Academy of Horology in Denver, Colo., and Bradly University in Peoria, Ill. He moved to California and worked for Douglas Aircraft during the Korean War. He moved back to Minneapolis and worked at Power's Department Store in the watch and clock repair division and at Minneapolis Honeywell in the research department.
He married Rose Painschab on Oct. 18, 1953, in Buffalo. In 1955, they moved to New Mexico where he worked at the Los Alamos scientific laboratory until 1961 when they moved back to Minnesota and operated Skonberg's Jewelry store until 1969. He worked for the city municipal store until he retired in 1986. He was a member of the Masons, the VFW and the American Legion and belonged to the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.
He is survived by his wife; children: Sandy (and Mike) O'Brien of Glenwood and Douglas (and Linda) Skonberg; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by one son: David; one brother; and one sister.
