Lost canoeist rescued last night in Meeker County
LITCHFIELD – A canoeist was rescued last night in Meeker County after his canoe tipped over and he walked through thick woods and a cornfield.
Robert Tiwari, 45, of New Prague, was not injured in the ordeal.
Tiwari told authorities that he had rented a canoe from The Riverside Store in Forest City at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and planned to canoe on the North Crow River for a few hours, camp overnight and then return the following day.
He said the river current was stronger than he had anticipated and his canoe overturned. Tiwari was able to get back into his canoe and paddle to shore and eventually walked through a dense wooded area and a cornfield to get out to 675th Avenue.
He called his family to say he was lost. But when his family failed to make continued contact they called the sheriff’s department at about 8:45 p.m. asking for assistance.
As a deputy worked with the canoeist's cellular provider to try and pinpoint his location Tiwari called 911.
A dispatcher was able to determine Tiwari’s approximate location by asking him to describe his surroundings and the dispatcher relayed the information to the deputies, who eventually located Tiwari by driving in the area and activating sirens.
Tiwari was able to describe to the dispatcher when the sirens were most audible.
Tiwari declined medical attention and he was driven by a deputy back to the vehicle he had left parked at the Riverside Store.
