MACCRAY in 3A baseball title game
GRANITE FALLS -- MACCRAY managed just three hits, but scored two runs, which was enough for Jordan Smith and the Wolverine defense to beat Adrian 2-1 in the winner's bracket final of the Section 3A baseball tournament Saturday.
The Wolverines (20-2) advance to the section final against the winner of Tuesday's Wabasso-Adrian game Thursday in Granite Falls. MACCRAY would need just one victory to advance to the state Class A tournament June 11-12 at Chaska's Athletic Park.
MACCRAY caught a break in the first inning to score the game's first run. Tyler Dammann doubled to left field with two outs, then Adrian intentionally walked Jordan Smith. After a fielder's choice, Smith got into a rundown between first and second, with allowed Dammann to score from third.
Adrian tied the game in the fourth with three singles. Justin Wolf drove in the tying run.
But the Wolverines would get the job done with two outs again in the fifth. Kelly Siverhus walked and then Brandon Madsen's triple chased home pinch runner Jamie Boonstra for a 2-1 lead.
Smith got out of a jam in the sixth after Adrian's Jordan Kontz tripled to lead off the frame with two strikeouts and a fly out.
In the seventh, Adrian had runners and first and second with two outs, then Smith took a one-hopper off of his leg, but fielded it between the mound and third base and got the force out at third.
"Jordan really pitched out of jams well against a really good hitting team," said MACCRAY coach Ted Perry. "It was a very intense game from the first pitch to the last pitch."
