ST. PAUL -- It's always nice to finish on a winning note. Only eight boys basketball teams in the state can say that when the season concludes; the champions and the third-place winners of each of the four classes.

MACCRAY is among the eight this season after upending Chisholm 72-53 in the Class A third-place game Saturday morning at Concordia University.

Senior forward Seth Hinrichs capped an illustrious career for the Wolverines with 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. He cashed 12-of-14 free throws. In the three tournament games, Hinrichs had 65 points, 36 rebounds and 11 assists to earn all-tournament honors along with junior post Brady Boike.

Leading 8-6, the Wolverines went on a 12-2 run to lead 20-8 and never looked back. Corey Abbas, in his best game of the tournament, had a hand in the first three baskets during the run. He hit a short jumper and then a three-pointer before assisting on Boike's layup. Hinrichs then drained a trey and Riley Aeikens capped the run by hitting a jumper.

It was the first state appearance in 15 years for MACCRAY (28-4) and ended in its highest finish.

After Springfield cut the deficit to 42-34 in the second half, Riley Aeikens hit one of his two 3-pointers to put the Wolverines ahead 45-34. They never led by less than 10 points after that.

Chisholm has really good guards who are smart and good shooters," said Hinrichs. "But we hit some big three-pointers for an early lead and we got their big guy in foul trouble."

Boike finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, Abbas also had 15 points to go along with five assists. Aeikens chipped in with 14 points and three steals. Taylor Thissen had four points, Jamie Boonstra two and D.J. VanKlompenburg added a free throw.

The Wolverines shot 45 percent from the field (24-for-53) and 75 percent from the free-throw line (18-for-24). Chisholm shot only 37 percent (19-for-51) from the floor.

"Everyone was down that there would be no state championship for us," said Hinrichs. "But we got our minds off that today before the game. I'm glad to finish with a win and a medal."

Adam Vake had 12 points and seven rebounds for Chisholm. Blayne Waselk contributed 10 points.
