Man faces felony assault charge for fight during soccer match at YMCA
WILLMAR -- A 22-year-old Willmar man faces a third-degree assault charge for allegedly throwing a punch that knocked out a 17-year-old boy's tooth during a soccer game at the Kandiyohi County Area Family YMCA.
Mohamed Musse Hussein appeared Thursday in Kandiyohi County District Court. Unconditional bail was set at $10,000. Conditional release was allowed on his personal recognizance, provided he has no contact with the alleged victim or enter the YMCA. He also faces a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge. His next appearance is April 19.
According to the complaint, Willmar police were called around 7:30 p.m. Feb. 10 to the YMCA on a fight involving two males. The 17-year-old, who held a piece of his front tooth in his hand, reported he'd been confronted and punched by Hussein. Hussein told the officer he didn't know what happened and the teen must have been hit by the ball.
Officers reviewed surveillance footage, showing a group playing soccer in the gym. The young men involved in the case were on opposite sides and appeared to be getting physical with each other throughout the game. On the video, the teen appeared to foul and then Hussein hit him with a closed fist. The teen then grabbed Hussein and pulled him down. The fight ended when the teen kicked Hussein in the head.
