WILLMAR -- A district judge has ordered a mental competency evaluation for Thomas Harold Kremer, 62, of Kandiyohi, who faces eight first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct char-ges for al-legedly mo-lesting two children. In an order filed Monday, Judge Donald M. Spilseth or-dered that Kremer be examined by forensic psychologist Dr. Edmund Nadolny or another examiner.

The order includes that the examiner report back to the court if Kremer is mentally ill or deficient, and whether he can understand the proceedings and participate in his defense.

Kremer had been scheduled for a two-day jury trial in Kandiyohi County District Court.

The charges against Kremer were filed in March, after a sheriff's deputy was called to a home in Kandiyohi on a domestic incident. A now 16-year-old girl said Kremer had touched her inappropriately multiple times over the last couple of years and that Kremer had told her it was a personal thing between them and not to tell anyone else.

On March 15, a child protection worker and a detective spoke with the girl, who clarified that Kremer had touched her body inappropriately and performed sex acts on her.

The girl told the detective she believed Kremer had also inappropriately touched a 15-year-old boy. The boy was interviewed and said the girl had told him about what Kremer did to her. The boy also said Kremer had touched him inappropriately and had performed sex acts on him. Like the girl, the boy said he didn't want to tell anyone or speak to an officer because he was embarrassed and afraid of getting in trouble.
