Man from Willmar, Minn., gets 65 months in prison for getting teenager pregnant

WILLMAR -- Derrick Jose Arredondo, 23, was sentenced Monday to 65 months in prison, plus lifetime conditional release, for getting a now 16-year-old girl pregnant last year.

Arredondo is currently serving a 48-month prison sentence and 10-year conditional release period for having a sexual relationship with another girl, a 14-year-old from Willmar.

The sentence handed down Monday in Kandiyohi County District Court by District Judge Kathryn N. Smith was for third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Arredondo was also ordered to register as a predatory offender.

The stay of execution on Arredondo's first prison sentence that he is currently serving was revoked Aug. 31, just two weeks after he received the stayed sentence. He appeared in court that day on the newer charge for getting the second girl pregnant.

As part of the sentence in the first case, Arredondo had been ordered to have no contact with juvenile females, but texted the pregnant girl just hours after he was sentenced. The texting communication included 13 texts in a five-hour period.

According to the order by Judge Michael J. Thompson, Arredondo admitted to the probation violation at the Aug. 23 hearing. In the order, Thompson concluded that Arredondo is a "controlling predator" of young girls who had shown he would continue to have contact with young, vulnerable females.

The first charge -- also third-degree criminal sexual conduct -- was filed after a man reported to Willmar police that his 14-year-old daughter was receiving harassing text messages and calls from a man in Willmar.

The father suspected his daughter was having sex with the man, who was identified as Arredondo. Both the girl and Arredondo told police they had sex, and Arredondo said he knew how old the girl was.

The girl's mother had learned of the relationship and ended it.

The second charge was filed after Willmar police received information Aug. 12 from a police department in Oregon that a girl had a sexual relationship with Arredondo and was in the third trimester of pregnancy with his baby.

The girl lived with her father in Kandiyohi County until June and kept in contact with Arredondo via e-mail and Facebook.

She told investigators in Oregon she had had sex with Arredondo in Willmar on many occasions and that he knew she was carrying his child.
