CLARA CITY - Marcella A. Gunter, age 93, of Clara City, formerly of Sacred Heart, died Sunday, March 3, 2013, at the Clara City Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Renville. The Rev. Paul van de Crommert will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Renville. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5-7 p.m. in the Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Renville. Visitation continues on Saturday one hour prior to the Mass at the Church in Renville.

Marcella A. Gunter was born on the family farm near Maynard, Minnesota on February 10, 1920, the daughter of Arthur and Clara (Harguth) Priebe. She graduated from St. Clara’s Catholic grade school in 1934, and Clara City Public High School in 1938. On May 29, 1941 she was united in marriage to John M. Gunter Sr. at St. Clara’s Catholic Church in Clara City. They lived in Clara City until February 1943 at which time they moved to Sacred Heart where John was employed as a rural mail carrier. John died on August 26, 1987 and Marcella remained living at the family home until June 2010. At that time she moved to the Prairie Park apartments in Clara City. In June 2011, she moved to the Clara City Care Center.

Marcella was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Renville for over 65 years, where she was very involved with many functions in the church including being the church organist for more than 50 years, a CCD teacher, and past president of the Council of Catholic Women. She received the Bishop’s Medal of Service award in 1985 for her involvement and dedication to both the church and community for her many years of service. In addition to working as a nurse’s aide at the Granite Falls Hospital for 22 years, Marcella was very active in the community of Sacred Heart including the Women’s VFW auxiliary, the United Way Campaign, Sacred Heart Women’s Improvement Club, Blood Mobile and volunteering for numerous activities in the community. She was also a past president of the annual Sacred Heart Summer Fest.

She loved to play cards with her many lady friends from Sacred Heart, Renville and Clara City, having been a member of a Sacred Heart card club for over 65 years. She also enjoyed what she called her "handy work", (embroidery and quilting) and loved to visit with friends and family. Marcella was also the last surviving member of the Sacred Heart Kitchen Band.

She is survived by her children, Jim (and Vickie) of Spicer, John (and Sue) of Green Valley, AZ, Larry (and Kathi) of New London, Pam (and Mark) Patnode of Blaine, Marcia (and John) Hauck of Andover. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren: Camey, Jeremy, Holly, Melissa, Eric, Heather, Megan, Mary, Stacy, Sean, Mandy, and Joel, 23 great grandchildren, brothers Vernon Priebe of Clara City, Bernard Priebe of Albert Lea and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter Mary Ellen; and her brother Allen Priebe.

Memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association.
