WILLMAR -- The Willmar High School marching band will launch its season today with an appearance at a parade in Buffalo.
The band is scheduled to compete in seven events this month in Buffalo, Benson, Paynesville, Hutchinson, Sauk Rapids, Alexandria and at "Drum Beauty" in Stillwater. The Marching Cardinals also will be featured during Willmar Fests in a downtown parade June 25 and the Grande Day Parade on June 27.
Section leaders this summer are: Kelsey Hansen, flute; Chayla Johannsen, clarinet; Ryan Freitas, alto saxophone; Shelby Morton, tenor saxophone; Brad Kallhoff, low woodwinds and tuba; Phil Knutson, trumpet; Danielle Erickson, mellophone; Grant Kallevig, trombone; Trey Haugen, snare drum; Greg Hilleren; tenors; and Ben Watson, basses.
Band directors are Terry Brau and Bryan Mara. Drum instructor is Jeremy Schreifels.
Sue Snorek is the colorguard drill designer and instructor, Trisha Vlaminck is the colorguard instructor, Ellie Holtz is the honor guard coach and Patrick Hand is the brass coach.
Band members recently returned from a tour to Orlando, Miami and Key West, Fla., and Cozumel, Mexico.
Willmar High School is in its fourth year of competitive marching after a 15-year hiatus. In the last three years the Marching Cardinals have placed in every competition and took first at Winona Steamboat Days and the Zumbrota Falls Covered Bridge Festival with outstanding drum major, outstanding winds and outstanding drumline awards.
