Marie Banken May 8, 1921 - July 27, 2009

APPLETON -- Marie Elizabeth Banken, 88, of Appleton, died Monday at Appleton Area Health Services.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in Appleton. Burial will be at the Appleton City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church with a parish prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Arrangements are by Zniewski Funeral Home-Vaala Chapel in Appleton.

She was born May 8, 1921, at Osakis to Peter and Anna (Ruether) Weber. She graduated from Appleton High School in 1939. After school she worked at JC Penny in Appleton.

She married Frank Banken on Sept. 24, 1947, in Appleton. They moved to a farm north of Appleton. She worked for Joe Fox Catering from 1978 until 1999.

She was an active member of St. John's Catholic Church and served with the altar and rosary society for many years. She received the Bishop's Medal of Service in 1996. She also taught Sunday school at St. Agnes Catholic Church and St. John's Catholic Church for many years. She was a 4-H club leader for the Hegbert Winners.

She is survived by two children: Peter Banken of Appleton and Becky (and David) Arndt of Montevideo; two grandchildren; and a brother: Gregor (and Dorothy) Weber of Philip, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1980, one sister and two brothers.
