WILLMAR -- Marie J. Carlson, 96, of Willmar, died Thursday at Willmar Commons.
The graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today at Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar. Arrangements are by the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.
She was born Jan. 5, 1913, in Willmar to Torger and Jennie (Selseth) Sletten. She graduated from Willmar High School, Willmar Normal Training, St. Cloud State University, where she earned a bachelors degree in education, and the University of Minnesota where she earned a masters in special education. She taught in two rural schools near Willmar, District 60 and District 63, The Village School in Kandiyohi and several elementary schools in Willmar.
She married Clarence R. Carlson on Sept. 24, 1936, near Waterloo, Iowa. She was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar and was a charter member of the altar guild, served on the church council, taught Sunday school and release-time classes and belonged to various circles, the workshop committee, fellowship committee and the library guild. She was a member of the Rice Hospital Auxiliary, Rice Hospital Volunteers, Bethesda Homes Volunteers, Library Friends, Sons of Norway, and AAUW where she had served as secretary, treasurer and historian.
She is survived by her children: Judy Lokensgard of Mankato and John (and Sue) Carlson of Irvine, Calif., and Aurora, Colo.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one sister: Agnes Carlson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and one brother.
