Mark U. Balk April 24, 1956 - March 8, 2009
ALEXANDRIA -- Mark Urban Balk, 52, of Alexandria, died Sunday at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Lake Community Church in Alexandria. Inurnment will be in the Swift Falls Cemetery in Swift Falls.
He was born April 24, 1956, in Adrian to Lloyd and Mildred (Leis) Balk. He attended school at Our Lady of Good Council Catholic School through sixth grade and graduated from Worthington High School in 1974. He worked for Commodore's manufacturing mobile homes in Worthington and moved to Montevideo to work for Friendship Homes. For the last 20 years, he has worked for Mid Central Steel as an ironworker and was a member of the local 512 ironworkers since March 1, 1997.
He married Marianne on April 12, 2003, in Alexandria. They have lived in Alexandria. He celebrated 22 years of sobriety on Feb. 28.
He is survived by his wife; daughters: Autumn (and Josh) Rathbun of Sevierville, Tenn., and Angie (and Brian) Meyer of Ocheyedan, Iowa; one grandson; stepchildren: Wanique (and Kalin) Evenson of Montevideo and Simeon Peterson of Benson; three stepgrandchildren; siblings: David (and special friend, DeeDee Ward) Balk of Buffalo, Don (and Pat) Balk of Worthington, Bill (and Julie) Balk of Wilmot, Juliann (and Jerry) Sturn of Maple Plain and Mary Ellen (and Clayton) Strain of Rochester.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a stepson: Gabriel Peterson.
