Marlin Herman July 30, 1920 - Jan. 20, 2014
OLIVIA - Marlin Herman died Monday, January 20, 2014 at the RenVilla Health Care facility following an extended illness. He was 93 years old and a member of what has often been called the "Great Generation." A public visitation will be Friday, January 31st from 4-6 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia. A private family funeral will be held and interment will be in the Olivia Cemetery.
Marlin was born July 30, 1920 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania to Clottie Isaac Herman and Anna Mae (Moyer) Herman.
He graduated from Mifflinburg High School in Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania.
He married Frances Louella Shawver on June 27, 1940. They celebrated their 73rd Wedding Anniversary last year.
Marlin served in the U.S. Army, 75th Infantry in World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium.
He worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad for eleven years. He farmed and ran a chicken ranch before coming to Minnesota to manage Glendairy Farm in Glenville, Minnesota. He ended his working career as a loading dock foreman for Wilson & Co. Meat Packers in Albert Lea. He retired from Wilson & Co. after 25 years.
Marlin is preceded in death by seven brothers, four sisters and his parents. He is survived by: his wife Frances; his only son Gary; his daughter-in-law Sharon; four grandchildren, Rick (and Nancy) Herman, Terri (and Bob) Muench, Randy Herman (and special friend Viola Bogard) Melissa (and Carl) Haces; and nine great grandchildren, Jennifer (and Eric) Benz, Ben (and Meghan) Herman, Joseph Kremer-Herman, Katrina Muench (and fiance Zack Johnson), Taylor (and Mallory) Herman, Nathaniel Kremer-Herman, Alyssa Muench, Alexandria Haces and Rebekah Muench.
