Deaths ruled homicides: Grandson of Paynesville couple arrested for murder

BIRD ISLAND -- Mary T. Novotny, 69, of Princeton, formerly of Bird Island, died Tuesday at St. Croix Regional Medical Center in St. Croix Falls, Wis.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Bird Island, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are preferred.

She was born Sept. 29, 1939, in Willmar to Othmar and Marjorie (Gallagher) Baumgartner. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Bird Island in 1957 and received her medical technician training at the University of Minnesota. She worked at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague, St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes, Edwards Hospital in Naperville, Ill., and Boswell Hospital in Sun City, Ariz.

She married James Novotny on Sept. 3, 1970, in Montgomery.

She was an accomplished organist.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters: Theresa Ann Novotny of Aitkin and Susan (and Brian) Gillingham of Osceola, Wis.; three grandchildren; and siblings: James (and Anna) Baumgartner of New Boston, N.H., Kenneth (and Lucy) Baumgartner of Park Rapids, Ronald Baumgartner of Spicer, Elaine (and Richard) Roth of Huntington Beach, Calif., Daniel (and Judy) Baumgartner of Rockville, Benita (and Richard) Weier of Poway, Calif., and Judith (and Sandy) Gerard of Granby, Colo.

She was preceded in death by a sister in infancy.
