Melvin E. Lee Jan. 25, 1911 - Jan. 6, 2009
LITCHFIELD -- Melvin Edward Lee, 97, of Litchfield, died Tuesday at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Litchfield.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Augustana Memorial Chapel in Litchfield. Private family inurnment will be at a later time.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are by Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield.
He was born Jan. 25, 1911, in St. Paul to John Lee and Anna Halaas. He grew up on a farm near Buffalo Lake and attended District 10 School, graduating from eighth grade in 1926. He worked in Iowa picking corn and then building grain elevators in Minnesota, the Dakotas and Iowa. In 1936, he started working at the Twin Cities Ford Plant and worked there during World War II making tanks and parts for bombers.
He married Edith Carlson on Sept. 16, 1939, in Northwood, Iowa. They lived in south Minneapolis until 1946 when they moved to rural Chippewa County. He worked as a mechanic for cars and farm vehicles and then began doing carpentry work in Minneapolis. He was a member of Carpenter's Local 1644. They lived in Minneapolis for 11 years and, after retiring in 1972, moved to Litchfield.
He is survived by his wife; children: Carol (and Dean) McWilliams of Minneapolis, Doris (and Gerald) Snyder of Fredericksburg, Va., Elaine (and Paul) Julin of Brooklyn Park and James (and Mary) Lee of Lakeville; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; siblings: Bertha Tjosaas of Benson, Ellen Bosch of Montevideo, Jenny Claussen of Benson and Albert (and Darlene) Lee of Coos Bay, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his daughter: Nancy.
