Men's basketball: Warriors clip Western Wisconsin

LA CROSSE, Wis. — A short-handed Ridgewater men’s basketball team slowed a Western Wisconsin’s high-powered offense just enough to win 87-83 on Wednesday.

Two Warriors regulars, Jordan Schwarz and Jeremy Olson, didn’t make the trip because of illness and guard Zak Pendleton played only seven minutes, also because he was sick.

“I think we came into the game with three healthy guys,” said Warriors head coach Bob Knutson. “But they really stepped it up. They were more alert and more in charge than they’ve been all year. I just sat back and let them play.”

The Cavaliers are a score early and often type of team, Knutson said, noting that they scored 96, 94 and 91 points in their three previous games and lost all three of them.

Western Wisconsin tried to ramp up the pace but Ridgewater did a solid job of dictating the action, Knutson said.

“(The Cavaliers) don’t really play good defense but it’s kind of by design,” Knutson said. “They want to hurry up and get the ball back so they can shoot the three. But out guys ran the clock down very well. They shot the three well but we had a nice lead and we made our free throws at the end.”

Terrance Lockett led the Warriors with 28 points, and he was one of five Ridgewater players scoring in double figures. Beau Herrig had 11 points and 11 rebounds, Jake Rambow scored 14 points, Melvin Kromah finished with 12 and Neil Helgeson scored 11. Helgeson also had 7 rebounds and Kromah grabbed 6.

The Warriors play one more road game, at Anoka Ramsey on Saturday, before returning to Willmar for three of four games.
