WAHPETON, N.D. — Speed is a killer, especially for basketball teams just starting to find their legs.

The North Dakota State College of Science ran the floor quickly and efficiently in a 93-67 win over Ridgewater on Wednesday.

The Wildcats led by 17 points at half and didn’t ramp down their attack in the second half against a Warriors team playing just their second game of the season.

“They’re very good,” said Warriors head coach Bob Knutson. “There is so much ball pressure and they’re athletic and they know how to run the floor.”

The Wildcats, who average 98 points per game, improved to 6-1, while the Warriors fell to 1-1.

Ridgewater plays next at home against Mesabi Range at 8 p.m. Friday. The Warriors then take on Central Lakes at home on Saturday.

NDSCS’ Quashingm Smith-Pugh scored a game-high 20 points and Dion Bradley scored 18.

Ridgewater’s Beau Herrig scored 18 points and also had 5 steals, and Terrance Lockett scored 16. Dejuan Curry led the Warriors on the boards with 7 rebounds, and Lockett had 5 boards and 4 assists.

Knutson said he expects good things from his team and that he was pleased with parts of the NJCAA Division III Warriors’ performance against a team that plays in Division I.

“Overall, I was pleased with what we did in a lot of areas,” Knutson said. “There were stretches where we looked darn good. I think we’ve got  a nice team, we just have to learn consistency and work on our focus. We’ll learn and move on. I think this will make us better.”
