NEW LONDON -- Merlin Harold Wendland, 64, of New London, died Wednesday at his home after a battle against ALS.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake near New London. A private burial will be in Bellingham Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church and for one hour prior to the services. Johnson Funeral Home in New London is handling arrangements.
He was born July 5, 1944, in Appleton to Clifford and Lillian (Opp) Wendland. He grew up on the family farm and attended Bellingham High School, graduating in 1962. He joined the National Guard and, in 1964, took over the family farm.
He married Linda Johnson on Aug. 28, 1970. They lived in rural Bellingham where they farmed and he began selling seed for Gold Country Seed in 1991. They retired from farming in 1997 and moved to Little Norway Lake near New London. He continued to work as a district sales manager for Gold Country Seed until 2007. He was a member of First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake, the American Legion in Bellingham and New London.
He is survived by his wife; children: Kim Wendland of Moorhead, Cheryl Adelman of New London, Tonya Wendland of Minnetonka and Cory Wendland of New London; his mother of New London; two grandchildren; siblings: Gail (and Dale) Wendland of Cerritos, Calif., and Dennis (and Marianne) Wendland of Arden Hills.
He was preceded in death by his father; two sons: Kile and Sean; and one brother.
