NEW LONDON - Merrill W. Hanson, 97 of New London, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2013 at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery in New London. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

In Lieu of Flowers memorials are preferred

Merrill Winfield Hanson was born on Feb. 4, 1916 on the family farm near Cottonwood, the son of Ludwig and Nellie (Dotseth) Hanson. He was baptized at St. Lucas Lutheran Church and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Granite Falls. He graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1935. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. In 1937 he became an employee of the U.S. Dept. of Ag., fruit and vegetable branch in the market news reporting section. From 1944 to 1946 he served in the United States Army at various post throughout the states.

On Aug 3, 1946, Merrill was united in marriage to Dorothy Peterson in Willmar. After returning from the Army, he was again employed by the USDA and served in a number of offices throughout the United States, including 10 years in Seattle, and 15 years in Chicago. After 34 years with the USDA, Merrill and Dorothy retired to George Lake near Spicer. They also wintered in McAllen, TX for 35 years. In 2001 they moved to New London. Merrill and Dorothy were able to share in 66 years of marriage.

Merrill was an avid golfer and member of Little Crow Country Club. He also had a great interest in antique cars and was the owner of several including a 1916 Model “T” Coupelet for 75 years. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, New London American Legion and Willmar Car Club.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Donald (Linda) Hanson of New London and Betty (John) Levstik of Fairplay, CO; granddaughters, Tracy Levstik, Sarah (Adam) Gross, Jasmine (James) Hall, Kara Hanson (fiancé, Adam Paleafei), grandson, Ben Hanson (special friend, Megan) and great-granddaughter, Hailey Gross. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Howard and sisters, Norma and Marlys.
