MELROSE -- Ron Welle began volunteering to help disabled persons enjoy the outdoors about seven years ago, only to discover it was his passion.

Nearly two years ago he organized Midwest Outdoors Unlimited, a non-profit organization devoted to providing outdoor recreational opportunities for the disabled.

Welle now spends much of his time fund raising and recruiting volunteers to make possible outdoor adventures for disabled persons. He has assembled a variety of equipment, from wheelchairs with special mounts for rifles to "puff and blow'' trigger releases for persons without the use of their arms and hands.

Welle said the organization helps with a variety of special outings, but turkey and deer hunts have been the most popular. The group also has worked with Let's Go Fishing of Minnesota to help with fishing and boating excursions for senior citizens.

The organization has served roughly 200 disabled persons in the last two years, including veterans who have lost limbs in the service of their country to people weakened by battles with cancer.

Welle encourages people with disabilities to contact Midwest Outdoors Unlimited. Volunteers and donations are always welcome.

Midwest Outdoors Unlimited is on the web at: www.midwestoutdoorsunlimited.com

Welle can also be reached by phone at 320-987-3526.
