Milan to celebrate women in athletics

MILAN -- Women in athletics will be celebrated on Saturday, Nov. 7 in Milan in the school gym.

The celebration will feature a noon luncheon with speakers Marian Bemis Johnson and Dorothy E. McIntyre, authors of the book "Daughters of the Game." It tells the story of Minnesota girls basketball from 1891-1942.

There will also be a recognition of some of the women's teams from the 1970s and all women athletes.

There will also be a lunch and supervised activities for children.

Milan is among a number of area schools, including Appleton, Benson, Granite Falls, Madison and Montevideo, which had girls' basketball teams from around 1910-1935.

Doors open at 11 a.m. for social hour. The luncheon begins at noon featuring speakers Johnson and McIntyre.

Activities for girls and women of all ages, ranging in levels of intensity and duration from 'Horse' and 'Around the World' to 3-on-3 or 5-on-5 will be from 2:30-4:30 p.m.

There will also be a demonstration of the Two Court Game used by the early girls teams and the opportunity for others to try it.

The cost is $12 for luncheon, speaker and events and $5 for the kids lunch and supervised activities.
