MILAN -- The Milan Community Foundation launched the Karen Jenson Endowment Fund Sept. 30 with a Norwegian tea at the Milan Community Center. This new fund is designed to provide financial assistance to needy students at the Milan Village Arts School in the name of one of Milan's most famous artists.

Jenson is among those who helped establish the school.

Approximately $5,000 was raised by the end of the evening.

In order to establish the fund under the auspices of the Southwest Initiative Foundation, a minimum of $10,000 is needed. Once the fund is established, it is anticipated that $500 per year will be available to the Milan Village Arts School.

Start-up costs were provided through grants from the Martinson Foundation, the Milan Community Foundation and the Milan MOVERS. All individual donations will go directly to the endowment. The general community endowment, of which Jenson was a founding member, is now more than $100,000 and is also administered by the Southwest Initiative Foundation.

Jenson, recipient of multiple awards for her Norwegian rosemaling, is pictured on the community mural teaching the art to a handful of Milan women who also became award-winning rosemalers. Jenson recently received an award from the Southwest Minnesota Arts and Humanities Council for lifetime achievement.

Additional tax-deductible contributions honoring Jenson's work and supporting the Village Arts School may be made out to the Southwest Initiative Foundation and sent to the Milan Community Foundation at PO Box 91, Milan, Minn. 56262.
