Milroy's 16-hit attack overwhelms Rails, 14-1
WILLMAR -- Driving the ball to all fields, the Milroy Yankees pushed in three runs in the first and two more in the second en route to hammering the Willmar Rails 14-1 in seven innings Monday in a Cornbelt League game.
The Yankees unleashed a 16-hit attack to keep the Rails (2-13 overall) searching for their first Cornbelt win.
Austin Dietz went the distance to earn the win on the mound, striking out 10 and allowing just four hits and two walks.
Willmar's only run came in the sixth when Josh Oestreich got hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and later came around to score with the help of two Milroy errors.
Josh Hadley fueled the Yankees' rout by going 3-for-3. Justin Schlemmer, Dietz and Andy Schmidt added two hits each. Schlemmer, Matt Bauer and Micah Gronli each drove in two runs.
Willmar loaded the bases in the first inning with no outs on a single by Matt Seehusen and back-to-back walks. But Dietz got clean-up hitter John Sawatzky on a foul popup behind first base and then got Adam Fagerstrom to ground into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Losing pitcher Todd Gregg surrendered six hits and six runs in four innings of work for Willmar.
The same teams meet Friday in Milroy for another 7:30 p.m. meeting.
