Minneapolis mayor says he may run for governor
DULUTH - It wasn't a clear declaration of candidacy.
But during an appearance on Friday night in Duluth, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak came pretty close to saying he's running for governor.
"I might do this," Rybak said when asked point blank if he was going to run. "I have leaned toward ... not running for mayor again. I've looked at it. I am looking at it."
His comments contradict a report several months ago that the popular Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party mayor of Minneapolis was going to run for a third term in City Hall.
"I am determined to get a great new governor," he told more than 120 people that filled a banquet room at Peace United Church of Christ for a Progressive Action fundraiser. The liberal Northland group was formed after the death of Minnesota Sen. Paul Wellstone to continue his work and progressive agenda.
Rybak started out his keynote address sounding very much like a gubernatorial candidate as he took aim at Gov. Tim Pawlenty for promising not to raise taxes, then cutting aid to cities.
