BUFFALO, Minn. (AP) — Police chiefs in Minnesota are strategizing on how best to deal with a tight supply of ammunition.

Buffalo Police Chief Mitch Weinzetl orders ammunition months in advance, knowing it could take a while for his shipment. With wait times as long as a year, Weinzetl tells KARE-TV ( ) he's had better luck at Walmart and Cabela's. The chief is stockpiling ammunition to have enough for the future.

In Proctor, Chief Walt Wobig turned to citizens in the community when his ammunition supply dwindled. Wobig says one citizen donated 1,500 bullets.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation says the country's 100 million firearms owners are driving the market for some 10 billion rounds annually, driven partly by fear that tougher laws will restrict the ability to buy firearms.
