Minnesota tribal gaming group holds Capitol rally today

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota tribal leaders and employees as well as workers from tribal casinos are rallying at the State Capitol in opposition to proposals to expand gambling in Minnesota.

The Tuesday rally is on the front steps of the Capitol. It's organized by the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association, which represents most of the state's tribes opposed to a state gambling expansion that could divert a reliable source of revenue for tribes.

Supporters of adding casino-style slots at horse racetracks in Shakopee and Columbus are pushing a bill that would authorize that expansion. It's been a perennial proposal at the Capitol that's never found success despite multiple tries.

This year, backers have suggested tax revenue from the new slots could be used to fuel a permanent state fund aimed at creating new jobs.
