Minnewaska Area girls dominate state girls golf

JORDAN -- Three-time defending state champion Minnewaska cruised to a 41-stroke advantage on the first day of the two-day Class AA state golf meet at Ridges at Sand Creek Country Club.

Emily Roering, the only senior in the lineup, led the Lakers with 74. She was one shot behind leader Cydney Hasselberg of Staples-Motley, who opened with 73.

Minnewaska's Allie Ostrander and Sarah Roering, both juniors, shot a 75 and 76, respectively, for third and fourth place. Freshman Brianna Janu of the Lakers was fifth with a 79.

Sarah Roering is the defending state champion. Emily, her sister, was third last year.

Minnewaska shot 304, while Red Wing was second with a 345 and Crookston third with 353.

The Lakers won Class A crowns in 2006 and 2007 and last year the AA title when the high school league went to three classes.

Last year, Waska finished 54 strokes in front and took the top three places individually.

Also on Wednesday, Sam Falk, a Minneswaska sophomore, shot 42-41-83 and is tied for 13th place. Waska eighth-grader Alex Guggisberg shot 52-45-97.

Among area individual qualifiers, Kaitlyn Kaihn of Litchfield is tied for 29th with a 42-45-87, Abby Fragodt of Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg is tied 45th at 45-47-92, Kalli Swanson of Litchfield is tied 56th with a 47-47-94 and Lauren Alsaker of BKMS is in 60th with a 52-43-95.

The 36-hole tournament concludes today. Foursomes begin teeing off at 11:40 a.m. and the last are schedules for 1:10 p.m.

Class AA Boys

Chris Tobkin, a New London-Spicer senior, is tied for 12th place after a 39-37-76 at the Ridges. Senior Andrew Whitchurch of Litchfield is at 38-39-77 tied for 17th place.

Sophomore Glenn Walls of International Falls and senior Mark Giorgi of Red Wing set the pace the first day, each at one-under-par 71.

Also from the area, Sophomore Taylor Olson of Yellow Medicine East and senior Pierce Peters of Minnewaska each shot 36-42-78, which is good for a tie with eight others for 21st place.

Junior Ryan Bergh of NLS is tied for 38th with a 39-441-80. Junior Tyler Jensvold of YME shot 39-43-82, tying for 82.

Class A

The Class A boys tournament at Pebble Creek, Becker, the pace was set by senior Connor Christoff of Providence Academy, Plymouth, after he shot a 37-33-70.

Zach Hauser, a sophomore from MACCRAY, is tied for seventh with three others after he shot 29-38-77.

Also from MACCRAY, sophomore Justin Wassink fired 46-46-92 (66th, tie) and junior Tyler Erickson of Dawson-Boyd cared 44-50-94 (73rd, tie).

In the girls division, also at Pebble Creek, Whitney Bertram of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa is tied for 20th after the Jaguars' senior came in a 48-48-96. Trisha Kienitz, a MACCRAY junior, shot 52-46-98 (tie, 32nd) while Dawson-Boyd junior Ivy Schueller posted a 54-52-106 for a tie for 55th.

Senior Anna Maria Tarazona of Madelia leads after the first day with a 77.
