MnDOT advises farmers that crews are mowing highway rights of way

WILLMAR -- Farmers planning to hay ditches are advised to mow along the highway right of way as Minnesota Department of Transportation crews have begun to mow in the area. The department mows the first cut of grass nearest the road surface once it reaches a height of 18 inches, because it can block motorists' vision, and create other safety problems.

"If a farmer mows that first cut at least five feet wide, our crews will stop their mowers and skip that section so they can use it for hay," said Craig Gertsema, MnDOT District 8 maintenance superintendent.

Gertsema noted that mowing should be completed by July 4, weather permitting. Motorists should be cautious as they encounter mowing crews.
