Minnesota Department of Transportation plow drivers reported difficult driving conditions on many area roads Monday afternoon.

Depending on the location, drivers may encounter snow or freezing rain, said T.J. Melcher, public affairs coordinator for MnDOT District 8.

Roads in the Willmar area have scattered slippery spots. Driving is more difficult in the Clara City and Madison areas, which have had heavy snow this afternoon.

Plow drivers in the Sunburg area reported freezing rain.

Melcher said drivers should use caution when driving and should give themselves extra time.

“That’s the biggest thing,” he said. “When you get in a hurry in these conditions, it causes you to take chances you probably shouldn’t.”

The winter storm warning for much of southern and west central Minnesota will continue through noon on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Periods of light snow and freezing drizzle this afternoon will switch over to heavier snow tonight, with snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches expected. The weather service expects little or no ice accumulation from the drizzle.
