MnDOT plans controlled burn near Highway 23

WILLMAR -- The Minnesota Department of Transportation plans to conduct a prescribed burn of a wetland along state Highway 23 southwest of Spicer within the next five weeks.

The actual date of the burn will be determined by weather and wind conditions, MnDOT said in a news release.

Prescribed burning is used to promote the growth and seed production of native prairie species and to reduce the growth of undesirable species.

The wetland is located near the junction of Highway 23 and Kandiyohi County Road 127. The wetland was created about six years ago as part of the Highway 23 four-lane project between Willmar and New London.

The burn date will be selected when the wind blows away from Highway 23.

Nearby property owners will be notified by phone the day of the burn. For additional information, contact Susann Karnowski, MnDOT senior engineer, at 320-214-6370.
