Montevideo 4th-grader dies after swimming mishap
A Montevideo fourth-grader has died following a swimming mishap Friday afternoon during a class outing.
The Montevideo School District issued a statement this afternoon saying that Eddie Ojer died at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. The youngster had been flown by helicopter to HCMC on Friday.
Eddie was among the students at Maria L. Sanford Elementary School in Montevideo who were on a reward day class outing Friday at the Kilowatt Center in Granite Falls. During the afternoon, he was found underwater and unresponsive in the Kilowatt Center's swimming pool.
Paramedics were unable to immediately revive him. Eddie was taken by ambulance to the Granite Falls Hospital and then transferred to HCMC.
Supt. David Baukol said classes will be in session Monday. Counselors and social workers are being brought in to help students, parents and staff.
