Montevideo to call for fire hall bids

MONTEVIDEO — A new fire hall could be erected by year’s end in Montevideo.

City Council members approved actions at their meeting Monday to prepare final documents and call for bids on the project. Documents should be ready by Feb. 20 and bids opened March 20, according to a timetable approved by council members, said City Manager Steve Jones.

Cities Edge Architects, Willmar, has prepared preliminary plans for the structure.

It will enclose approximately 13,000 square feet, and include six, double-deep bays for vehicles. Three of the bays will allow drive-through access. The structure will also include a hose tower, training room, and office and command center.

The structure will be designed for longevity. The main building will consist of pre-cast concrete walls and a steel truss roof structure.

Council members hope to award a bid on April 21 to allow construction to get underway in May. It’s hoped the new fire hall could be in operation by year’s end.

Preliminary estimates place the overall project cost in the range of $2 million.

The city is planning to construct the fire hall on North 11th Street, directly across from the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital. The site is currently vacant. It offers access on Windom Avenue and 11th Street.

The property is owned by the Martha Head and Trust, with an address of the CEUNN Company LLC of Minnetonka. The trust holds a controlling interest in the Twin Cities & Western Railroad.

The trust has not responded to correspondence from the city to purchase the property. The city had offered $108,900 for the site.

The district court will hear the city’s request to acquire the property on April 11.

Jones said council members are hopeful the court hearing will allow for the property’s purchase in order to allow construction to get underway in May.

The city’s current fire hall is part of the City Hall building and lacks the space needed for the department and its equipment. Moving the fire department will allow the city to expand the police department into that portion of the building, and solve its space needs.
