Muriel Genevieve Madsen was born March 15, 1918, in Lake Lillian, MN, to George and Mamie (Hansen) Vick. She graduated from Olivia High School and attended Teachers’ Training. Muriel became a teacher at the age of 16 and taught at numerous country schools around the Lake Lillian area. She continued to teach throughout her life and later as a long term substitute. Muriel Vick married Elder Madsen on June 28, 1946, at her parents' home north of Lake Lillian, and they were blessed with their sons Harlan and Marvin. Muriel was a faithful and active member of Rosendale United Methodist Church where she had been active as Treasurer and Financial Secretary for many years. She was always willing to help out with church events and dinners, insisting on bringing food, even when she was told she didn’t need to. She was a very selfless, giving person and made it a priority to make sure that people around her were fed and well taken care of. She always had cookies and other baked goods ready for anyone stopping by to visit. Muriel had been on the board for the Kandiyohi County Historical Society for 21 years. She was named Senior Citizen of the Year for Kandiyohi County in 1999. Muriel was very careful to not be wasteful with anything. She loved having flower and vegetable gardens and loved to share her harvest with family and friends. Whatever she didn’t use or give away, she canned or froze. Each August, Muriel diligently picked apples from the trees at the farm and supplied family, friends and neighbors with pies, crisps, and sauce. She also loved to share her homemade refrigerator pickles, made gallons at a time. She was a good steward of God’s creation, finding good uses for all parts of food, whether it was to feed the birds or cows in the pasture. She was resourceful and always found ways to re-use items, however small or insignificant they seemed. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing, milking cows, caring for the animals, and working on the farm. Muriel truly loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and never hesitated to volunteer her babysitting services, even as she grew more fragile. Her faith and her sharp mind remained strong throughout her whole life.

Muriel is survived by her two sons and their wives: Harlan (and Julie) Madsen of Lake Lillian and Marvin (and Catherine) Madsen of Anaheim, CA; her six grandchildren: Janelle (and Harold) Eisenbacher of Lake Lillian, Greg (and Tracy) Madsen of Lake Lillian, Kari (and Dave) Bonfield of Sartell, Christofer Madsen of Anaheim, Alicyn Madsen (and fiancé Jason Kozey) of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Haley Madsen (and special friend Kyle Muller) of Los Angeles, CA; and her eight great-grandchildren: Gabriel, Mia, Kincade, Quinn, Jeremy, Jordan, Carly and Jacob. Muriel was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, George Vick Jr. and one sister, Lenore Magnuson and her two grandchildren: Casee Madsen and Melyssa Madsen.
