National Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities slated in Willmar

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Shelter House of Willmar has scheduled activities during the observance.

Shelter House will celebrate its 30th anniversary with an open house event from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center. The public is invited.

Cash Wise Foods of Willmar will have a window display Oct. 6-12.

Shelter House and the Sheila Wellstone Institute will present a free community performance of "Journey to Safety'' by Pangea World Theater of Minneapolis at 7 p.m. on Oct. 14 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. The play is an artistic stage presentation of the challenges facing battered refugee and immigrant women when negotiating legal, medical and government systems. A question-and-answer session will follow.

On Oct. 15, Shelter House and the Sheila Wellstone Institute will sponsor a workshop on the Voter Safety Training program from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church. The training is designed to build political power for survivors and advocates in their work to end domestic and sexual violence.

The 5K Peace Walk to raise community awareness of domestic violence will begin at 9 a.m. on Oct. 25 at Robbins Island in Willmar. Registration begins at
