MONTEVIDEO -- Darek Jon Nelson, 24, of Montevideo faces four felony charges - second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter and two counts of second-degree assault - for the stabbing death of 18-year-old Vinessa Lozano Friday night in Montevideo.
The charges were filed this morning against Nelson, who is scheduled to appear at 11 a.m. before District Judge Dwayne Knutsen in Chippewa County District Court.
According to Montevideo Police, Lozano died at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital. She suffered more than 30 knife wounds in the attack, which occurred in the parking lot outside the restaurant. The first police officer to arrive at the scene saw the victim lying on the ground and the suspect standing over her with a knife. The suspect, later identified as Nelson, was ordered at gunpoint to drop the knife, which he did, police said.
Lozano and Nelson both worked at the pizza restaurant, according to police.
