NEW LONDON — The City of New London is asking all residents and businesses to run a water faucet in their home or business in an effort to keep water service lines in the city from freezing.

The city has had multiple service lines freeze each day because of the extreme frost in the ground, due to cold temperatures.

“This is going to be an ongoing problem,” Trudie Guptill, New London city administrator, said this morning, noting that there have not been frozen water mains, only service lines.

Citizens are asked to run one faucet in the house with the stream at the size of a pencil. Guptill suggests using the basement washtub faucet if possible.

“The flow will keep the lines open,” she said. “We are asking people to get it going as soon as possible.”

Water bills will be adjusted based on average usage so as to not reflect the additional water usage. Anyone with questions is asked to call the city office at 320-354-2444.

Similarly, citizens in Spicer are asked to take the temperature of their cold water tap periodically and if the temperature is below 35 degrees, to let their water run, also a stream the size of a pencil. Citizens must contact the city hall, 320-796-5562, to report they are running water in order to receive an adjustment on their water billing.
