New Yellow Medicine County, Minn., administrator will not have to take pay cut for the job
GRANITE FALLS -- The new Yellow Medicine County administrator will not have to take a pay cut for accepting the job.
The Board of Commissioners agreed Tuesday to raise the starting salary offered to new County Administrator Peggy Heglund to $92,203.79, which represents the 10th step on the county's 12-step salary schedule for the position.
Heglund was earning $89,328.71 when serving as director of human services for the county, a position she held since 2003. She was at the top of the pay level for the position. When she was offered the administrator position last month, the commissioners offered a starting salary of $89,215.08 for it, unaware that the offered salary was below what she was earning now.
The commissioners at their regular meeting Tuesday also acted to advertise in-house for a new human services director. The county's hiring committee recommended advertising in-house for the position, rather than advertising outside for candidates not currently employed by the county as well.
The commissioners noted that if they do not find a candidate within the county's ranks to offer the position, they still have the option of advertising outside.
Commissioners said that the county's original county administrator had encouraged them to advertise all vacant positions both in-house and outside. They noted that the county administrator search included recruitment with a professional firm, but ultimately led to the selection of an administrator from within.
