NLS’ Dreier earns 800th career win
The New London-Spicer girls basketball team defeated Paynesville 59-42 on Saturday evening on the Wildcats’ court, providing head coach Mike Dreier with his 800th career victory, all at NLS.
He began the season with 792 victories, tops in the state in girls basketball. The Burnsville native and Hamline graduate became the head coach at NLS in 1978.
Dreier earned his first win on Dec. 12, 1978 when the Wildcats upended Kimball 29-22.
He guided the Wildcats to their first state tournament in 1985. In 14 state appearances, the Wildcats have reached the championship game seven times winning Class AA titles in 1997 and 2002.
The coach’s 700th win came on Dec. 2, 2009, a 42-15 decision at Eden Valley-Watkins.
“It’s been a blur how fast it’s gone,” said Dreier. “I’ve been blessed with dedicated athletes, top-notch assistant coaches, and supportive parents and administrators.”
Dreier also told the Tribune that “as long the kids are still in it and I enjoy doing it” he will continue to coach.
