NEW LONDON -- Student enrollment in the New London-Spicer School District is higher than expected.

Enrollment Sept. 9, which was the first day of school, was 1,485 students, according to information provided by Superintendent Paul Carlson. The district counted 1,457 students at the end of the 2009-10 year and projected enrollment at 1,464 students in grades K-12.

The information was presented Monday at the regular meeting of the NLS School Board.

The increased numbers are a "good surprise," Carlson said Tuesday.

The count includes 110 kindergarteners. Enrollment increased in each class except third grade, where there are 106 students, but 107 had been expected. Official student numbers are not recorded until Oct. 1.

The district's average daily enrollment on Oct. 1, 2009, was 1,458 students.

The board also conducted the first reading of a new policy on employees' use of social media networks.

District officials felt the need to place clear expectations on staff members if they engage in using social media, Carlson said. The district's policy is modeled after a policy in place at Minnetonka Schools, he said, as there is no sample policy available from the Minnesota School Boards Association. The district gets the basic format and legal language for many of its policies from the MSBA.

The policy acknowledges the importance of online social media networks as a communication and e-learning tool, but prohibits employee use of personal use of such media on school time or equipment and sets other basic guidelines for social media use.

The board also conducted its first paperless meeting on Monday, with board members each using a netbook computer instead of paper agendas and documents, Carlson said. The computers cost $400 each, but the district expects to recover the cost in employee time, paper and postage costs in one year.
