NLS sets three dates to make up for snow days
NEW LONDON — The New London-Spicer School Board has approved having school on Feb. 17, which is Presidents Day, and on April 16 and 21.
To make up for days lost to weather cancellations, the board also added June 4 and 5 as teacher in-service days, with an additional potential teacher ins-ervice day on June 6, according to Superintendent Paul Carlson.
The district had marked the three days as potential snow makeup days on the school calendar, Carlson noted. The two April days were part of a four-day break around the Easter holiday. At the regular meeting Monday, the board also reviewed the 2014-2015 school calendar, which has more teacher in-service days throughout the school year and a week of spring break from March 23 to 27.
Next year’s calendar includes 170 school days, which is two fewer days than this school year, Carlson said. The district has longer school days than other districts and meets the minimum hours required for each level of instruction.
The board is expected to take action on the 2014-2015 calendar at the next board meeting on Feb. 10.
During a planning session after the regular board meeting, the board discussed using financial planning resources, such as www.schoolfinances.com, to project budgets, enrollment and finances up to five years in advance, Carlson said.
No action was taken on the matter, and district officials will research other, similar planning options, but action by the board is expected at the Feb. 10 meeting, Carlson said.
The cost of the planning services is expected to be approximately $3,900 per year, he noted.
The adoption of financial planning is part of the district’s budget cutting process, in which the district administration will present potential budget cuts at the Feb. 24 meeting and the board is expected to give final approval to the cuts at the April 28 meeting.
