NLS sinks LPGE
NEW LONDON -- New London-Spicer inched closer to a West Central North Conference title with a 68-34 win over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in girls basketball play Monday.
The Wildcats (14-1, 22-1) are in a virtual tie for first place with Sauk Centre (12-1, 20-1). NL-Spicer has one conference game remaining, a Feb. 24 showdown at Sauk Centre. The Wildcats handed the Mainstreeters their only loss so far, a 45-35 win Jan. 20 at New London. Sauk Centre has conference games against at St. Cloud Cathedral and at Melrose in between.
The Wildcats broke away from a 12-12 first-half tie with an 18-5 run for a 30-17 halftime lead.
Justine Dammermann paced NLS with 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Brianna Jacobson added 15 points and Taylor Thompsen had 12 points. Cassie Ziemer pulled down 11 rebounds.
The Thunder (7-7, 11-11) had reeled off five straight wins since losing at home to the Wildcats 59-46 on Jan. 29.
The Wildcats won their seventh straight since suffering their lone defeat to Albany on Jan. 27.
