NEW LONDON -- New London-Spicer improved to 8-0 in the West Central North with a 77-62 win over Melrose in boys basketball action Thursday.

The Wildcats (16-1), No. 1 in Class AA, scored 51 points in the first half and dominated the boards 38-21 to cruise to the victory.

New London-Spicer maintained its one-game lead on Albany in the conference race and moved four games ahead of third-place Melrose.

Five of the six NLS players who scored reached double figures, led by Aaron Johnson with 24 points. Aaron Jenny, Erik Tengwall and Justin Zylstra followed with 12 apiece and Jayme Moten finished with 11. Johnson also pulled down 11 rebounds, Zylstra had 10 rebounds and Tengwall also dished out seven assists and had six steals.

Evan Reller's 12 points paced Melrose (5-4, 9-6).

NLS plays at Milaca next Thursday in another West Central North Conference game.
