NEW LONDON -- A community mental health task force that met Monday at New London-Spicer High School is continuing to develop plans for a public forum in response to the recent deaths, apparently by suicide, of two NLS teens.

The forum could be held early next week, either on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday evening in the high school gym, said NLS Superintendent Paul Carlson. "We're trying to move very quickly."

The exact date and time of the forum will be announced in the West Central Tribune and on the school's website.

The purpose of the forum is to "impart factual information" about mental health and suicide, said Carlson.

The event will include a speaker and small group discussions.

On Monday, the task force reviewed data about suicide from the Minnesota Department of Health and Kandiyohi County and created six work groups to explore instant messaging communication system, social media positive messaging, social media responsible use, crisis response evaluation, resource development and the public forum.

The first priority of the task force is to conduct the forum, but the group spent time brain-storming other topics that may be addressed in the future. Carlson said the task force, which was created just last week after the two suicides were reported, will likely be a long-term committee that will involve more people and more issues.
